Newsletter Term 3 2021

Hi everyone

Here is all the latest news from Step Beyond Studios

End of Term Sharing Sessions

Family and friends are warmly invited to come and watch classes at our sharing sessions which will take place during the last 2 weeks of term. All classes run at their normal day and time. To make it easier for those of you with children in multiple classes we have decided to run these sharing sessions as follows:

Classes held in the Senior Citizens Hall will have their sharing sessions next week Monday June 28th  – Thursday July 1st.

Classes held in the Community Hall will have their sharing sessions in the last week of the term Monday July 5th – Saturday July 10th.

The students will demonstrate their classwork and this will give you an idea of how they are progressing so far this year. Please do come along and sit in the studio to watch your child in their class. We hope you will be impressed with their progress made so far this year.

Students should ensure they attend these sharing sessions dressed very tidily in their normal dance attire and with long hair tied back neatly. Ballet students - hair in a ballet bun please. Our Saturday Pre Schoolers should come dressed in their favourite dance outfit.

Masterclass with Ballerina Celeste Gaiera was a Great Success

Very recently a large group of our senior ballet students attended a masterclass at the hall taught by ballerina Celeste Gaiera. Celeste is a professional dancer with Texas Ballet Theatre in the USA and is a former student of Marian's. She is back in New Zealand now and it was so good to see her and for our students to have the opportunity to learn from her and be inspired. What a treat it was for them all.

Grace's Baby

You may have heard that our teacher Grace and her partner Tristan are expecting a wee baby boy this September! Congratulations Grace and Tristan! We are beyond excited to welcome the new member to the community very shortly. Grace will be heading into parental leave a few weeks into term three, but never fear, we will be bringing you some wonderful new faces during that time to inspire all of our students. And knowing Grace, she will still be around a lot, particularly during the show season.

One Step Beyond News: YouDance; Thursday June 24th

Our wonderful youth dance company One Step Beyond will be kicking off the performance season at an Auckland wide youth dance event, YouDance. Run by Northern Dance Network, this exciting performance will be an evening of creative expression from youth companies and secondary schools across the city. Dancers perform choreographic work in a non-competitive setting at the Raye Freedman Arts Centre in Epsom.

Experience A Day in the Life of One Step Beyond Day: Saturday 3rd July. 1pm - 2.30pm. This is a Free Event. (Please note change of time).

Did you know we have our VERY OWN YOUTH COMPANY?! We invite our students aged 8 years and up to come along and see what our talented youth company One Step Beyond is all about. Join the company dancers for a Muscle and Bone warm up then collaborate with the company members on artistic projects, learn company repertoire and have loads of fun! The artistic day of dance will culminate in an informal sharing session for friends and family. This is an awesome opportunity to experience what it's like to be in a real dance company.  Please contact Marian ASAP to grab your space as numbers are limited.

Annual show

Our annual show is scheduled for the weekend of November 6th and 7th and will be performed at Whangaparaoa College Theatre. Please be sure to keep this weekend free as we will be holding dress rehearsals at the theatre on the Saturday and the performances will be on the Sunday. This year the show is a lovely ballet story - The Four Seasons. This ballet can be performed as a whole or divided into 2 halves if needed to comply with any Covid level restrictions in numbers. Nearly all of our classes will be involved in the show. Exceptions are our Saturday Preschool class (who will have a separate performance opportunity at the Torbay Hall) and our Thursday adult ballet class.

Show Costume Hire

Over the years we have built up a huge wardrobe of costumes and we are constantly adding to this store so that we can provide costumes for all of our students. We ask that each student pays a small amount to cover the cost of costume hire. The amount per student is as follows: $35 per costume up to a maximum of $105. You can work out how many costumes you will have by checking the show roles list above.

Enrolments for Term 3

We need each student to return a completed enrolment form to us each year so please be sure to do this if you haven't done so this year. We need emergency contact details for you all and especially once we are at the theatre for our annual show. You can enrol via our website

If you will not return next term we would really appreciate you telling us as we need to know exact numbers in each group for show choreography and to organise the show costumes.

We are really looking forward to seeing you all at our sharing sessions from next week.

Best regards

Marian and Grace
